The resumption of cricket indoors, representative cricket, Women's Soft Ball Cricket, going social and more...

Cricket Indoors

All Stars: Sessions have restarted for 2019 at St Josephs (Sports Hall) with the All Stars (ages 5-8) up first with their session on Monday and with an enthusiastic video of the 'dive and catch' challenge a result.

Kwik Cricket: The soft ball Kwik Cricketers (9-12) are up next this coming Monday at the same time of 5-6pm with each group’s session then fortnightly.

Indoor Cricket: This starts up again at the same venue on Friday 19th Jan, 7-9pm with a good junior and youth turnout sought since there is also the adult distraction of the Poker Night at the Club.

The CricHIIT exercise sessions which were on Thursdays before Christmas have been paused but will resume. Please keep an eye out for details and encourage your friends to come when they do.

Cricket Outdoors

The hardy perennials have also resumed the Saturday Colts cricket sessions (U13s and upwards) with two already this year and with a good attendance. Including the adults coaching and helping and some seniors training themselves there were twenty at the nets during Saturday.

These are at Nunholm on Saturdays from 11-1pm (ish) with an emphasis on, and an introduction to, hard ball cricket. Just contact Trefor or the Club.

Winter Socials

The first of these for 2019 is this Friday 19th Jan from 7pm at the Sports Club with another Poker Night, hosted by Davie. Sign up (on facebook) and channel your inner Bond for some Casino Royale action.

Representative Cricket

Congratulations to Max and James H (U14), Sean (U16) and Katy, Orla, Niamh (U16 Women) who have been named in the respective Western Warriors age group squads for winter training in Glasgow. Five of last season’s U13 team are in West squads. Well done to team guru Trefor.

Also, a well done to Rosy. She is the local representative in the Stormers squad, one of the two Cricket Scotland Women’s regional teams and attended their first training session of the New Year at Dollar the other week. They are looking to blow away their Eagles rivals on the pitch as well as on twitter! (@CSStormers18)

Who knew, but Chris McBride (McBride number 3) is currently in the West Indies, in Trinidad and Tobago. He is with the Oxford MCCU side (a MCC university team) at the inaugural UWI World Universities T20 Tournament. He has notched up two scores of 60 plus so far in three games. The team can be followed online on facebook at (Oxford) Brookes Sport.

Women’s Cricket

There is the news about the Club’s Women’s Soft Ball Cricket Festival which is happening indoors at St Josephs on Friday 1st Feb, 7-9pm (no Friday Indoor Cricket that night). This is for all ages, abilities and fitness, women and girls, of little experience and none. There will be some cricket, some music, some cake and plenty of laughs. Check on the website or on facebook for details and bring along some friends.

There is also positive news pending about outdoor women’s team cricket for the summer and other women and girls plans which are in the pipeline. You can also get in touch about what you would like to see.

Coaches

There are Level 2 Coaching Children Courses coming up. If you are interested please let us know and we can assist and also with the course cost with the proviso of a coaching commitment subsequently for the club. We do need new coaches to respond to the increased number of juniors playing cricket at the club.

In Memory

Sadly news reached us of the passing of Larry Brockwell. He was one of the best players to have played for the Club and was a remaining link to the Dumfries side of the 1950s. There is a tribute to him on the Club website.
