Dumfries Cricket Club is very sad to hear of the passing of Peter Barbour, past player and a friend of the Club.

Peter was a young player with the Club from the late 1970s and beyond. A talented player for his school and Dumfries he provided all-round capabilities of teasing left-arm spin and an aggressive approach to batting.

He played for Dumfries 1st XI and was a leading protagonist of any side he played for and after his playing career supported the club through sponsorship and enjoyed a drink at Nunholm with his playing contemporaries.

When seventeen years old he played for Dumfries in the Club's 125th Anniversary Match. On the 27th August in 1978, Dumfries played against Scotland coach David Wilson's Scotland XI. After he bowled effectively in the first innings when the Scotland XI scored 202 for 7, Dumfries replied with 157 for 8 with Peter providing a reliable partner for David Hodge (28 not out) to ensure a draw.

When he returned to Dumfries he played when work commitments at "Barbours of Dumfries" permitted and did succeed in even playing many away matches when his team Captain would be relieved to see his Golf GTI speeding into the ground at the likes of Kelso's Sheddon Park and The Green at St Boswells in the days when Dumfries played in the Border League.

Peter was always entertaining company, and from his earliest days as a schoolboy playing for the 1st XI he enlivened the dressing room atmosphere. He also had plenty to say about proceedings on the field of play and was certainly not shy about advising his Captains what they should do.

He belonged to the 'nearly club' for centurions since he is remembered for a score of 99 not out at Nunholm when he took a single of the second last ball.

He was also a regular when Dumfries went on tour to Derbyshire and down south in the mid-1980s with other tour stalwarts Colin McKenzie, Trefor Williams, Allan Tweedie and the youngsters Davie Davidson, Stuart Alexander.

We send our condolences to his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Dumfries Baptist Church on Monday 6th December at 1.00pm, details of which are here - www.jardinefunerals.co.uk/funeral-notices/barbour-peter/
