A Happy Christmas today from Dumfries Cricket Club to all our followers, wherever you are.

Happy Christmas
A Happy Christmas today from Dumfries Cricket Club to all our followers, wherever you are, and to all our partners, sponsors, supporters, volunteers, participants, seniors AND ESPECIALLY OUR JUNIORS, and to all our guests and visiting teams that come along to Nunholm.

It is little while since our last bulletin so we have some snippets for you to peruse over your Christmas cocoa and to also let you contemplate the indubitable fact that the days are now getting longer. Yeah!

Support Your Club
The Cricket Club Committee held their December meeting on Friday last week.

As a result the Club AGM is scheduled for Friday 15 Jan 2021 at 18:30 ONLINE on Zoom.
Look out for the messages about how to be involved and how to attend. Get your 'webcam' or smart phone readied!

You are very much encouraged to get in touch if you can help out, or have any ideas or suggestions for club improvements for 2021. We welcome all assistance.

Meanwhile on the ground the Nunholm elfs have been hard at work industriously cleaning the artificial wicket in the middle. Thanks to Chief Elf Simon and Helper Elf Trefor.

That is is also the reason for the recent appearance of the 'Mariana Trench' that has magically been dug next to that artificial wicket. That is to improve the drainage on that wicket and the square. Work continues over the winter!

We are also working on plans for improvements to the nets and the training area and more information on that will follow.

Cricket from Boxing Day
Outdoor cricket is permitted under Level 4 restrictions. The cricket nets remain open for outdoor practice as long as you once more book a timeslot, link below, and adhere to the Cricket Scotland guidelines, maintaining social distancing whilst training. www.cricketscotland.com/covid-19-return-to-cricket/

Sports Club News
Bar Open, and Shut
Thank you to those who came and supported the weekend bar opening, and the club, during the recent period of local Level 1 lifting. However the bar will be closed for three weeks at least as the region moves up to Level 4 on Boxing Day. We will let you know.

Tennis Courts
The work on resurfacing the tennis courts is in progress but paused. The old carpet has been removed but additional work will be needed on the base surface (scheduled for the start of January) before the new carpet is laid. However thanks to hard work from the tennis section the courts have been made usable on the tarmac.

Two courts will be bookable from Boxing Day subject to the necessary guidelines. Follow the Tennis facebook page for updates www.facebook.com/dumfriestennisclub.

Squash and Racketball
Adult individual practice, household squash, distanced coached and under-18s games have been permitted.

However Level 4 guidance means further indoor sports restrictions and no squash at all is permitted from Boxing Day.

Gym closing
The same applies for the previous restricted bookings of the gym which will be closed as well from Boxing Day.

Jock's December and Xmas Messages
An update from Jock, our Dumfries Sports Club Chair, with news from around the club and the effect of coronavirus restrictions is provided via the newsletter links below.

"... There will be no AGM this month but it is hoped to hold it before the end of January. With the continued support of our members who have been tremendous throughout this difficult year we will come through and be stronger once this pandemic is over.

Wishing you all a happy and safe Christmas."

Overseas cricket
Pakistan
News from Lahore. Young Adam Malik was up and running with a score of 85 in his first game over in Pakistan during his time at the Abdul Qadir Cricket Academy, which is a top effort from Adam in a very new environment.

Australia
Well done to past player Josh (Geary) who took wickets as part of the Newcastle team in the recent NSW Country Championships on the Central Coast.

The side qualified for the final of the McDonald’s Country Championship against Riverina which is to be played in the New Year. Meanwhile at his club, Merewether CC in NSW, matches were then called off due to heat.

We spotted Declan (played here in 2018) a'leaping in this bowling photo from Murwillumbah Cricket Club. However he also resisted with the bat recently with a defiant 42 (!) in a one wicket defeat for his Panthers side.

Zimbabwe
In Zimbawe Tapiwa Mufudza (the spin twin with Declan here in 2018) has started in their National 4-day Logan Cup Competition. His team Eagles top the table after a couple of matches and he kicked off with 3 for 37 on the first day.

Do let us know about any other news of our past players.

The 'Scotland Team'
Congratulations and well done to Sue (Strachan) who has been named as the Team Scotland Commonwealth Games Manager for the Scotland Women's Team in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

This is the first time that women's cricket has been included in the Commonwealth Games and good luck to the Scots who take part in a 2022 qualifying competition to be part of the eight team tournament in Birmingham.

We hope that, with more hard work, being in contention for a place in that squad could be a realistic target for some of our junior girls.

Meanwhile, Sue has been talking of her hopes for the 2021 cricket season in Scotland, and for her Cricket Scotland Presidency, for the Press and Journal newspaper.

In Memory of Tom Kear
The Club is very sad to hear of the passing of Tom Kear, former President of the then Scottish Cricket Union. In the recent past he was a friend of, and interested spectator at, the club from his home just alongside the shed pitch boundary at Nunholm having moved to Dumfries. We send our condolences to his family and friends. The Cricket Scotland obituary can be found here
