50 years ago, the official Opening Night of the new pavilion with the first two squash courts took place on Saturday, the 16th October 1976.

The new building comprised two squash courts (courts 1 and 2) with the bar on the first floor, changing facilities on the ground floor and the old corrugated iron pavilion still in place, and in use, and connected via the downstairs corridor.

16 Oct 1976 - The Official Opening Night

Work on the building was completed on Friday, 15th October 1976 and the official Opening Night was held on the following evening, a late licence for the bar having been applied for, and granted. The culmination of five years of effort by so many people was celebrated in style and tributes paid to all those who had put in that effort, and especially to Mr Tom Farries, whose vision for Dumfries Cricket Club had at last been realised. Tom had refused to give up when things were not progressing smoothly, seeing problems as something to be overcome in order to reach his goal. His name, of course, continues to be remembered at the present Dumfries Sports Club, the extension to the bar premises (and fitness room) being named "The Tom Farries Suite".

A Cricket Section
The work of the Cricket Club committee was not completed until the Annual General Meeting of the Club. This was held on 25th November, when a new constitution was adopted in order to widen the sporting facilities offered by the Club. The new club was to retain the name DUMFRIES CRICKET CLUB and the old cricket club became the CRICKET SECTION of the new club, A copy of the new constitution was available for members to peruse.

Mr R.F.E. Bartlett was elected as the first Convenor of the new Cricket Section.

While the Club had new premises, the old cricket pavilion still stood and was still required for use. By March 1977 a tentative plan for the future development of the old pavilion site was outlined. All of the work was certainly not yet complete.
