Youth was to the fore when the Dumfries Cricket Club award winners for the season were celebrated at an awards presentation at the Club Day at Nunholm on Saturday.

Junior players were the Players of the Year for both Dumfries first and second teams after the sides finished fourth and second in their respective Western District leagues and after a breakthrough season for a number of Nunholm juniors.

The 1st XI Player of the Year was seventeen-year-old Munro Cubbon after being the top run scorer for the Vigilant Dumfries side, with 542 runs, and finishing with the best batting average of over 46 runs per innings. It was an extremely impressive summer for him as he amassed well over a thousand runs for the season across his first team games and for Western Warriors U17s and Scotland U17s. He scored his first ever century with 130 at Mearns, and that was after being out on 99 against Greenock two weeks earlier. He added another with 107 for Dumfries at home against Langside and he was close with two scores in the nineties for Scotland. He further contributed twelve league wickets for Dumfries with his bowling.

The 2nd XI Player of the Year was awarded to fifteen-year-old Cory Dawson for another impactful season by a junior player. He scored 540 runs in the league to be the side’s top run scorer, and second in the league, and also took 18 wickets. He too hit his first century with an innings of 107 against Greenock 2nds at Nunholm. He also appeared for Western Warriors U15s and made his debut for Scotland with Scotland U16s. Additionally, he was the top run scorer for the Dumfries Sunday team with over two hundred runs. As a consequence he was also awarded the Dumfries Youth Player of the Year.

Callum Reynolds-Lewis was the top wicket taker for the firsts, with 24 wickets, and claimed the coveted Jimmy Steele Bowling Award by taking 5 wickets for 15 runs at Hillhead. Tommy McGrath had the best bowling average for his 19 wickets. Ross Lamb was the leading wicket taker for the seconds, with 30 wickets, and skipper Andrew Dawson had the team’s best batting average of over 75 whilst scoring 452 runs.

Another junior making their way in senior cricket was thirteen-year-old Dashiel Trigg who had the best bowling average for the 2nd XI in taking 11 wickets and had the best batting average for the Sunday XI including hitting his first fifty, not out, to win at Wigton. Junior Lachlan Osmond led the Sunday bowling statistics with the most wickets and the best average.

Women’s Player of the Year was Macey Corbett-Byers for her bowling performances with Scotland U16 Girls and Watsonian Women which included the only Dumfries player hat-trick this season to help Watsonians reach the Scottish Cup semi-finals. Charis Ellicott was the winner of the Strachan Cup for the most improved player in coming through the Girls Dynamos programme.

The Junior Player of the Year was Oscar Hudson for his runs and captaincy of the U13s and junior performance awards for U11s and U13s went to Brodie Brown, Zayyan Manzoor, Lenny Lightfoot and Oscar Hudson.
