In Western Premiership 1 on Saturday, Vigilant Dumfries won their rain interrupted game at home against Drumpellier by 29 runs.

Dumfries chose to bat first and the first half of their innings was built around a score 62 by James Ritchie. He and Ben Plowman put together a fifty-run partnership after being three down early but when Ritchie was dismissed lbw, the side was in an uncertain position of 129 for 5 wickets. Keeper Fergus Bainbridge then controlled the second half of the innings, sharing valuable partnerships with Chris Brockwell (24) and James Hobman (15) who were both run out pushing for more runs. Together the batting line-up reached 220 when Bainbridge was the last out, also run out for 44.

A prolonged interruption for rain, 5 overs into the Drumpellier reply, meant an adjusted target of 174 in 31 overs. The opening bowlers, James Hobman and Nairn Cubbon, each claimed a wicket but then a near sixty run fourth wicket partnership between Jayathilake and Kumara managed to take the visitors to a challenging position of 105 for 3 with 8 overs left, and with a required run rate of just under 9 an over.

However, the Lochthorn Medical Centre Player of the Match, Alan Davidson, then dented those chances with three wickets in a single over. Then Drumpellier hopes rested with top scorer Kumara who was still there on 38 not out. Those hopes were dashed when he was well caught on the boundary by Chris Brockwell off the bowling of youngster Munro Cubbon for 46 as run pressure told. Drumpellier finished short of the target of 174 on 144 for 8 wickets after what was a good resilient team win by the Dumfries side with contributions from all round the side, both with bat and, importantly, in the field.

The win leaves Vigilant Dumfries sitting mid-table in fifth spot after five rounds of Western Premiership One. In Western Championship Two, the Dumfries 2nd XI match at Anniesland was cancelled due to ground conditions, and with the rest of the league schedule similarly affected, the Nunholm side remain at the top of the Championship league table.

On Saturday, the 1st team, Vigilant Dumfries, play GHK at home in Western Premiership One.
