On Saturday, both Dumfries sides managed a very convincing double over their opponents from Greenock with the 1st team winning by 185 runs, and the 2nds by 160 runs.
In Western Premiership 2, Dumfries 1st XI, Vigilant Dumfries were put in to bat at Greenock and a collective batting effort took the side to 253 for 7 wickets. Opener Munro Cubbon continued his recent run scoring with 45 and Lachlan Friend, with 27, and Billy Morgan with 47 not out provided the backbone of the innings. The final challenging total was reached thanks to quick scoring from Max Corbett-Byers, with 20, Callum Reynolds-Lewis, with 24, and Stuart Corbett-Byers hit a rapid 41 to help add seventy runs in the final six overs.
Then early wickets by the opening bowlers sank any Greenock response. Munro Cubbon took the first two caught behind, one a brilliant grab at slip by Wahid Jabarkhil, followed by a direct hit run out by Tommy McGrath. Lachlan Osmond bowled the fourth for a wicket on his first team league debut. Dumfries then cleaned up the rest with Tommy McGrath finishing with four wickets, as did Munro, to dismiss the home side for just 68 and a big winning margin that consolidated the side’s third place in the league. Munro picked up the Barbours Player of the Match award for his wickets and runs.
In Western Championship 2, Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm moved up to top spot after a run-fest at home against Glenpark, Greenock 2nds, with the opportunity to bat first seized by the younger members of the side. Opener Finley Trigg was going well when he was unfortunately run out for 44 with the side past the hundred. Thereafter the day was dominated by a formidable 223 run third-wicket partnership between number three Cory Dawson and number four Oliver Barnard.
They accelerated so comfortably through the gears that the spectators wondered if both could reach their century. Fifteen-year-old Cory succeeded in reaching his maiden century finishing on 107 not out and was the M Devlin Decorating Player of the Match. Oliver ran out of deliveries and was bowled on the second last ball trying for the remaining four for an impressive innings of 96 off just 72 balls. The final Nunholm total was a massive 341 for 3 off the forty overs.
In Glenpark’s reply it was first change bowler Ross Lamb who took a 5-for in dismissing the first five wickets and, opting for leg-spin, the youngest member of the side, Dashiel Trigg, then took four to have the visitors all out for 181.
The Dumfries Sunday XI fell short by forty runs in their league match at Appleby chasing a total of 228 for 2. Sultan Kamran hit 40 in the reply of 188 all out and Billy Morgan followed his Saturday runs with 50.
Scotland u16s were defeated in their fixtures at Nunholm last week against Lancashire and Cheshire. They return to Dumfries on the 3rd August to play Derbyshire.
