The Dumfries sides did the double over Hillhead on Saturday with two solid league wins for the 1st and 2nd teams.
In Western Premiership 2, the Dumfries 1st team, Vigilant Dumfries, had a comprehensive nine-wicket win at Hillhead. After putting the home side in to bat it was the first change bowlers that inflicted the damage. Callum Reynolds-Lewis took 5 wickets with his spin, and earned the Crichton Partners Player of the Match award, and Tommy McGrath continued his wicket taking exploits with three, to dismiss Hillhead for just 60. Opener Chris Bellwood then dispelled any low-chase concerns by scoring 39 not out for the nine-wicket win to keep Dumfries in third spot.
In Western Championship 2, Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm, won by 42 runs at home against Hillhead 2nds. Sixteen-year-old Lachlan Osmond starred with the bat hitting 14 boundaries, He opened and reached his highest score for the club with an attacking innings of 98 and was the Hidden Beauty Player of the Match. Nunholm totalled 247 for 6 helped by a series of contributions from the rest of the top order including skipper Drew Dawson scoring 37 and then Mark Abnett hitting 28 to reach a competitive total.
The Nunholm bowlers then made regular inroads into the Hillhead line-up. The Trigg brothers opened the bowling and they dismissed the top four. Finley took two wickets and thirteen-year-old Dashiel went on to take four wickets in the innings. Hillhead eventually finished short on 205 all out for Nunholm to stay in second place in Championship 2.
In the West T20 Rowan Cup Quarter-Final it was an exciting finish at Nunholm against Premiership One side Prestwick. A good bowling and fielding effort bowled out Prestwick for 91 with Cory Dawson outstanding in the field with three run-outs, two with direct hits, and Munro Cubbon claimed three wickets.
The Dumfries batting slumped in reply but the lower order persisted, from an unlikely position of 30 for 7, with Alan Davidson hitting 32, until seven runs were needed off the final over with one wicket left. However, the side fell short to lose by just five runs.
The Sunday XI were successful in a close league win at Wigton. Sultan Kamran, with 64 not out, and Dashiel Trigg, with 50 not out, both starred with the bat as the last pair in chasing Wigton’s score of 176 for 9. Dave Lightfoot claimed five wickets in the Wigton innings.
This week Dumfries first team all-rounder Munro Cubbon has been selected for Scotland U17s for their ECB Cup matches on tour against Derbyshire.
On Saturday, in Western Premiership Two, the Dumfries first team, third placed Vigilant Dumfries, play at Helensburgh who are in seventh spot.
