In Western Premiership 2, third placed Dumfries 1st XI, Vigilant Dumfries, won their home encounter against fifth placed Stirling County by five wickets. The visitors were asked to bat first and at one point were progressing well at 98 for 1. However the introduction of spin stalled that progress. Chris Brockwell then removed two wickets, and Callum Reynolds-Lewis took 4 wickets for just 23 runs, including the opposition skipper who was the top scorer with an innings of 78. Tommy McGrath followed up with his two wickets and Stirling were reduced to a final total of 168 all out.
The Dumfries top three all contributed with scores from Chris Bellwood (18), Munro Cubbon (28) and when Lachlan Friend was caught for 23 Dumfries had, in their turn, reached 98 for 4. From there Ronan Dunbar and Max Corbett-Byers turbo-charged the response. Dunbar was eventually out for 52, which included 48 runs all scored in boundaries to claim the Mogerleys Butchers Player of the Match award. Corbett-Byers was also faster than a run-a-ball in hitting his 32 not out to take Dumfries to a five wicket win. Defeat for the two sides above them in the Premiership, Kilmarnock and Uddingston, narrowed the gap to the top two places.
In Western Championship 2, Nunholm, Dumfries 2nd XI, won their match at Stenhousemuir 2nds by 39 runs to stay in second place. Put into bat, Nunholm set a total of 195 for 8 in the forty overs. Cory Dawson top scored in reaching another fifty with his innings of 68 to collect the Lochmaben Accounting Player of the Match award. Opener Patrick Obank contributed 29 and Wahid Jabarkhil scored a rapid 24 in the middle order.
Like the first team, spin also made inroads for Nunholm with the tactic of Sultan Kamran opening the bowling yielding two wickets in his first over to put Nunholm on the front foot. Winston Osmond also spun his way to two wickets and Ross Lamb joined Kamran in finishing with three wickets with his seam bowling. Good catches by Pat Druce and a diving effort by Lachlan Osmond supported the bowlers as Stenhousemuir fell short of their target with a final total of 156.
Macey Corbett-Byers continued her appearances in a Scotland shirt playing for Scotland Emerging Girls in their matches against Cumbria U18 Girls at Nunholm on Wednesday and at Northumberland on Friday. A busy cricket week continued with a defeat in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final for Watsonian Women on Saturday and then, on Sunday, taking three wickets against Galloway.
On Sunday, Dumfries welcomed Galloway for a forty-over match. Dumfries set an imposing total of 260 and Galloway fell short chasing on 132 in an enjoyable local friendly. Finley Trigg was the Axl Menlove Roofing Player of the Match for his score of 45 backed up by two wickets,
On Saturday, in Western Premiership Two, the Dumfries first team, Vigilant Dumfries, who continue in third place, play at league leaders Kilmarnock. In Western Championship Two, Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm, who are in second spot, play fourth placed side Mearns at home.
