The Dumfries 1st team, Vigilant Dumfries, won their opening league encounter of the season in Western Premiership 2 at home at Nunholm with a solid win over visitors Helensburgh with youngster Munro Cubbon awarded the Axl Menlove Roofing Player of the Match.

Helensburgh opted to bat first and were heavily indebted to Thomas Burford who compiled a chanceless innings of 94, batting at number four, whilst Dumfries kept taking wickets at the other end. Indeed, the opening bowlers succeeded in removing both openers in the first two overs. Nairn Cubbon finished with two wickets and Tommy McGrath took three as Helensburgh reached 174 for 9. Munro Cubbon, Alan Davidson and Callum Reynolds-Lewis also contributed a wicket each in an all-round bowling performance which restricted the visitors to their final total.

Opener Munro Cubbon then worked to take his side to victory with an innings of 69 not out. He was assisted by Stuart Corbett-Byers with 28 and Lachlan Friend with 37 to take Dumfries to 125 for only 1 wicket at one point. The winning target was reached in the 35th over with a total of 178 for the loss of 4 wickets.

The Dumfries 2nd team, Nunholm, were defeated at Anniesland in Western Championship 2. Another young player, Lachlan Osmond, matched Munro's score of 69 opening for Nunholm and he was the game's top scorer in an attacking innings with 13 boundaries, as Nunholm totalled 130 all out. His batting, plus a wicket, earned him the Walker & Sharpe Player of the Match award. The Nunholm bowlers persisted in reply, including Ross Lamb who bowled a good spell for two wickets. However, with not enough runs, Anniesland eventually won by 6 wickets.

The Dumfries Sunday XI lost a close finish at Penrith in the Sunday League. Lachlan Osmond hit his second fifty of the weekend with 54 retired and Harrison Angel claimed five wickets, including a hat-trick, as Penrith managed to chase a Dumfries total of 130 all out but with just three wickets left.

Last week, Dumfries U15s were eventually beaten by Glasgow Accies U15s in the dusk at Nunholm in the ECB T20 Cup. Dumfries scored 107 for 9 with Edward Ellicott top scoring with 29. Accies passed that after eighteen overs for four wickets down with Lleyton Endredy taking two of the wickets.

Next Saturday, Vigilant Dumfries play Greenock at home in Western Premiership 2 and the second team, Nunholm, play away at Greenock 2nds in Western Championship 2.
