Dumfries U16s became the U16 Scottish Cup Winners, for the first time, with a big win by 74 runs over Aberdeenshire U16s in the Cup Final at Kelburne Cricket Club on Sunday.
Dumfries were asked to bat first and hit a huge score of 173 for the loss of two wickets in the T20 match. All the top five batters contributed with scores from openers Bill Middlemiss and Lachlan Osmond, a fifty retired by Munro Cubbon, and then not out contributions of 46 and 27 by Billy Morgan and Nairn Cubbon respectively as Dumfries accelerated rapidly in the later overs, including 26 scored off the final over, to reach, ultimately, a winning total.
Then opening bowlers Finley Trigg and Lachlan Osmond together removed the Aberdeenshire top five, which included three Scotland representative players, by taking two and three wickets respectively to set back the chase at 50 for 5. A brilliant diving catch in close by Edward Ellicott set the tone with the first wicket in Finley's first over, and the first of two sharp catches by keeper Middlemiss removed Aberdeenshire's top run scorer in the tournament in Lachlan's second over.
Captain Munro Cubbon followed up to settle the contest by taking the next four wickets, with three bowled, in tandem with a good bowling spell from Cory Dawson. They were replaced by Isaac Ishmael and Jasmine McCulloch, and it was Jasmine that claimed the winning wicket to dismiss Aberdeenshire for 99 all out. A good bowling performance was supported by a fine fielding display with Danny Allsop in particular busy with his diving stops on the boundary.
The win was set up by the first innings batting and the victory completed a set of impressive team performances, with each cup match won by a large margin, and against more fancied teams for a very special cup run and achievement by the players.
In Western Premiership One on Saturday, Vigilant Dumfries were defeated by 2 wickets in a tense finish at Uddingston. Dumfries set a total of 145 all out with Ben Plowman marshalling the lower order with the top score of 34 not out. Walker & Sharpe Player of the Match Alan Davidson took three wickets to restrict the home side to 71 for 5 and then wickets from Callum Reynolds-Lewis and Adam Malik brought the finish to 2 wickets to get and 17 runs to win. However, an unbeaten 41 not out by Ross Lyons meant that Uddingston edged through to victory.
The margin was wider as Nunholm dominated their fixture in Western Championship 2 against Irvine 2nds, Marress. Andrew Dawson scored a century with 128 and Sultan Kamran swiftly hit 80 as the Nunholm side amassed 307 for 6 in the forty-over match. Junior Cory Dawson shared a near century partnership with dad with his innings of 37. In turn, the Irvine reply was dominated by the spin of Aiden Goodin who took the second wicket at 67 for 2 and then proceeded to take 6 wickets for 22 in his eight overs, and claim the Axl Menlove Roofing Player of the Match, for the visitors to be all out for 121.
On Saturday, the 1st team, Vigilant Dumfries, play Ayr at home in Western Premiership One. The 2nd team, Nunholm, play at East Kilbride 2nds in Western Championship 2.
