Stainton U11s 231 for 7 beat Dumfries U11s, 228 for 8
Dumfries U11s played a close league game at home against Stainton U11s on Sunday but with a win, tie, or a loss possible on the last ball it was the visitors that won in a tense finish.
Stainton batted first and the Dumfries bowlers successfully took wickets with 2 wickets each for Bill Middlemiss, Nairn Cubbon and a wicket each for Macy Byers, Cory Dawson, and Jasmine McCulloch. However it was the extras that were to prove significant with that being top scorer in a score of 231 for 7. Macy was the exception in bowling two maidens. Jacob Holden took a good catch in the deep and keeper Billy Morgan scrambled well to dive for a skied catch.
The Dumfries batting pairs kept the target in range but were knocked back by dismissals deducting five runs from the score and it was one more dismissal than Stainton that ultimately made the difference. Billy Morgan (9) and Nairn Cubbon with 14 were the ‘positive’ batters for the home side. A wicket in the 16th and final over meant it was four to win off the last ball. That wasn’t to be with 228 for 8 but the match provided a learning experience for the team in their debut season.
