Dumfries Juniors travelled to sunny Gatehouse for their first match of the season with a team of experienced youngsters and inexperienced older ones. The combination proved too strong for Galloway’s youngsters. Accurate bowling and some power-hitting were the difference.
In lovely conditions Dumfries batted first and after a steady start the innings was given impetus by Sam Taylor’s flurry of boundaries. Tom Currie and Max Corbett-Byers then made sure that a challenging total of eighty nine for three was posted. Carmen Cluckie and Matthew Hynd were the wicket-takers.
In reply Galloway were positive with good running between the wickets but some top-bowling from Dumfries openers Katy Anderson and Aiden Goodin put pressure on and both took a wicket in their second over to put Galloway on the back foot.
Change bowlers Corbett-Byers and James Hobman gave no respite and Tom Currie almost finished things off but it was left to debutants Luke McBurnie and Sam Taylor to provide the final wicket and the champagne moment. It was Luke’s second over and Sam’s first delivery standing up. The ball slid down the leg side only to be glanced straight into Sam’s gloves for a final total of thirty three and a win for the visitors.
