The junior season continued on Friday with a seven-a-side match between Adam’s Anarchists and Callum’s Covenanters played with 20 overs per side and 10 wickets to fall to be “all out”.
The Covenanters batted first and were indebted to James Little who got them to 66 for 9. This was a fine innings with good support in the face of some excellent bowling and catching – the highlight, and the Silver Fern Horticultural Carbonated Drink Moment, being the sharp caught-and-bowled by Freddie Duncan. The captain himself was twice victim to good catches when looking solid and Hyder Hussain provided some impetus to the run scoring.
The bowling in general was excellent; Freddie adding a second to give him figures of 2 for 16 from 4 overs but the outstanding bowler was James Hobman with 4 for 14 from 6 overs.
In reply Max Corbett-Byers and Sam Taylor got the scoreboard rattling along but Sam missed a straight one. Adam then got his team within striking distance of the total but his retiral meant the responsibility was on the youngsters to see their team home.
James Hobman confirmed his Annandale Insurance player-of-the-match status with a solid not-out innings to accompany Max to victory with 4 overs and 3 wickets to spare.
The game was allowed to continue which allowed Matthew McBurnie his debut bowling spell and we were rewarded with a triple-wicket maiden which ended the innings in timely fashion with the last ball of the 20 overs.
Callum’s Covenanters 66 for 9 (20 overs)
James Little 22, James Hobman 4-14, Freddie Duncan 2-16
Adam’s Anarchists 73 all out (20 overs)
