Friday evening brought Dumfries Thirteens’ league campaign to the half-way stage with an all-round solid performance and victory over a young Lanercost team. Batting, bowling and fielding were all of a high standard with the running between the wickets particularly pleasing.
The batting was dominated by Max, which is impressive considering the quality from Fergus B and the maturity shown by James H and Aiden and Matthew’s power. The Dumfries total of 135 for two dismissals and two retirals was not likely to be overtaken.
The pick of the bowlers was Niamh with her combination of away swing and seam movement. Max, James H and Matthew might disagree. Fergus C can also be pleased with his first real spell for the side. Munro C, on his debut, also took a wicket in his over to end the game.
The fielding was mainly very steady – two catches made to look simple, ground fielding that was solid and ably backed up by a wicket-keeper (Fergus B) doing it for the first time.
However the two champagne moments were the spectacular catch – having misjudged it in the first place it must be said – and the direct-hit run-out to dismiss their top scorer.
Add these to his two-over spell of off-spin and 30 runs after only 5 overs of the match sneaks Max the player of the match award.
