Report: Thirteens win at Lanercost

The Under 13s survived a sometimes ragged display to win against Lanercost at The Priory. Orla Montgomery got them off to a blistering start with the bat and Aiden Goodin, with a calm bowling spell saw them home.

To be fair to the youngsters there was a fair sprinkling of inexperience on the field. Batting first Dumfries were 42 in the fourth over when Orla Montgomery retired with 30 but a combination of wickets at the wrong time and some over-hitting resulted in a disappointing total. However Fergus Bainbridge can count himself unlucky when out caught on the boundary to a well struck hook shot for 21 and Vaughn Staples gave a hint of the batter lurking within. James Hobman contributed an ultimately essential 26 to be not out at the end of the innings.

Lanercost batters did not quite manage the same opening burst but when their top batter retired more than half the runs had been made and half of the overs were left. After 15 overs , and 5 overs left, only 25 runs were needed with 6 wickets in hand.

Defeat was looming but a change of pace was the turning point – the introduction of Aiden Goodin altered the course of the game completely and the skipper cleverly recognised it to give Vaughn Staples his maiden bowling spell of the season. The two of them bowled their combined 6 overs for a mere 12 runs and took 4 wickets and that was the game won, aptly by 13 runs on Friday the 13th.

Dumfries now have a nervous wait to see if they will be crowned champions in their first ever competitive season. It has been an excellent campaign by the youngsters and the experience of playing week in and week out against the same age opposition has been a massive benefit to their development.
