Captain Goodin made his first good decision on winning the toss - bat first! He was rewarded by a fine knock from debut opener Fergus Cubbon who sailed to his retiral. Aiden himself batted well and the two of them put on 43 for the first wicket. After a bit of a wobble Niamh Muir came in at five and was the other major contributor - 22 runs full of aesthetically pleasing shots. Munro Cubbon can also be pleased with himself being involved in a 26-run partnership. A good all-round batting display against some quality bowling saw the Doonhamers to 94 for 5 - a more than respectable performance.
However Penrith set about the task of overhauling their target like a team used to getting their own way and it could have been over very quickly. However Katy Anderson put an ever-so-slight dent in their confidence with a caught-and-bowled and Max Corbett-Byers did some more damage with possibly the worst ball of a good spell of bowling but the highlight of the evening was Cory Dawson's first over at this level - his third ball was very nearly his hat-trick ball - the would be catch falling just inches short of cover!
A 4-wicket defeat with overs to spare may not sound good but the youngsters should feel proud of themselves - not least Nairn Cubbon for an impressive performance behind the stumps conceding only the single bye.
