Carlisle won the toss and elected to bowl first but Dumfries got off to a steady start with Aiden Goodin and Fergus Cubbon looking comfortable. Both took advantage of any loose bowling and Goodin was unlucky to be bowled by a ball that straightened, albeit on the third bounce! Fergus continued to punish anything wide of off-stump and retired with an excellent 30. Max Byers and Niamh Muir then upped the pace with Byers retiring having played shots all round the ground. Matthew McBurnie continued the good work by hitting some lusty blows in a quick-fire 23. Niamh was unfortunately run out late in the innings trying to get every run possible and a special mention should go to Munro Cubbon who was not-out and continues to look comfortable at this level even though he will have another 3 seasons at in this age-group!. The running between the wickets continues to improve so Lisa will be impressed.
Carlisle have some dangerous batters but Katy Anderson made sure that the demanding target was unlikely to be achieved and is looking like getting back to her best. This allowed Captain Goodin to give the younger bowlers a chance to shine and this they did; Harith Hassan picked up 2 wickets and Cory Dawson bowled a good couple of excellent overs. The total always seemed to be out of Carlisle’s reach even with the big hitting Keiran Titterington clearing the rope on 3 occasions! The fielding was a bit patchy (Alex McMenemy excepted) but only one bye to go with his catch-behind was impressive by Nairn Cubbon and likewise was brother Munro’s direct hit for a run-out.
It was a good all-round performance from an improving young team. Onwards and upwards.
And thanks go to the ground-staff for their efforts.
