Dumfries played two matches on Sunday thanks to the help of their hosts Galloway. Their first match in the morning was a Scottish Cup game against Ayr which resulted in a close finish.
Dumfries were put in to bat and lost a wicket caught in the first over from Merli. Thereafter the Dumfries innings was dictated by the efforts of opener Kirsty Strachan. She shared a productive partnership with Ally McCubbin and they took the score up to 70 in the fourteenth over when McCubbin was bowled for 20.
Pip Benson supported Strachan up until the second last over as the pair took the score past the hundred when she became Merli’s second wicket. The Parkdale Garage Dumfries Player of the Match, Strachan, finished on 74 not out and the Dumfries batting did well to avoid the threat from four overs from Scotland all-rounder Samantha Haggo.
Rosy Ryan took the first Ayr wicket, bowled, in the first over but Haggo rapidly reached twenty until Ryan took a screamer at cover off the bowling of Sue Strachan to dismiss her. However Merli was batting well at the other end in a match-winning effort.
Naomi Cowan bowled well and Kirsty Strachan returned to the attack to take two wickets caught and Sue Strachan claimed an lbw. However it came down to the last over with Merli still batting and the winnings runs were struck with just two balls left.
