In the Scottish Cup, Dumfries Women played their twenty over tie at Stirling on Saturday.
Dumfries were asked to bat first and had a promising start after skipper Sue Strachan hit the first two balls for four. They were rapidly followed by two further fours by her but Scotland squad bowler Georgie Howells stalled the innings with wickets in the fourth over. A further one in the subsequent over meant Dumfries were abruptly on the back foot. Strachan found a partner to stick with her but Lois Wilkinson, another with Scotland pedigree, had Sue caught and bowled for the top score of 22 as she took the first of her three wickets.
Dumfries reached a total of fifty four. Then greater experience prevailed when Lorna Jack, the Scotland keeper, opened with Charlotte Dalton and they proceeded to find the boundary as that total was readily chased down without the loss of a wicket. Jack finished on 25 not out as the stronger Stirling side and individuals dictated a deserved win.
Nevertheless it provided a valuable learning opportunity for the Dumfries eleven as did the subsequent practice game which both sides enjoyed afterwards. The sides have a league repeat fixture on Sunday at Nunholm.
