The Dumfries Sunday XI managed an exciting win with just one ball remaining at West of Scotland at the weekend.
The West of Scotland Development side batted first and after two early successes for Dumfries with two wickets to Irwin the innings was dominated by a partnership between opener Deshmukh and number four Clarke. Each went past fifty as the Dumfries bowlers looked for a breakthrough. Spin was introduced with Geary coming on and he bowled Deshmukh for the top score of 71. Keeper Todd Rafferty also claimed a stumping off the bowling of Gordon Marshall to remove Clarke for 60 but Ashworth added a late flourish before he was caught for 26 off the bowling of youngster Callum Reynolds-Lewis for his second wicket.
Wests also had two early wickets but Rafferty and Muir steadied the innings and at the twenty over half way point it stood at 86 for 2 with Rafferty nearing fifty and hitting the ball sweetly. However he didn’t make a deserved fifty being caught on 49 after hitting eight boundaries. Muir was also caught and two other wickets followed bowled by Ali. That brought Gurupal Singh and the DuPont Teijin Films Dumfries Man of the Match Josh Geary together and it was their undefeated century partnership that managed to get Dumfries over the line for a four wicket win with a winning boundary hit off the second last ball.
