Croma Vigilant Dumfries Sunday XI 255-5 v Kirkwood CC 189 all out
While the Scotland national team created history by beating the world number 1 team in England in the One Day International, Dumfries Sunday XI loaded with future talent were taking on strong Kirkwood side at Nunholm in the blistering June sunshine. Young batsmen in Adam Malik and Max Corbett-Byers were scoring big as the Sunday XI claimed another victory.
15 year old Adam Malik opened the batting and looked reassured at the crease as he had excellent shot selection, making quick singles, mixed in with aggressive fours. Kirkwood made inroads into the Dumfries line up with both overseas players falling in their twenties, but Malik remained the rock as he passed his 50 midway through the match.
He was joined by 12 year old Max Corbett-Byers who is now playing short bowling with distain as he cut and pulled his way to his first 50. Malik eventually fell for 84 going for a quick single, while Corbett-Byers went on to score 60 not out. Croma Vigilant Dumfries Sunday XI finished on 255, which provided a lot of reassurance for the bowlers.
Kirkwood were faced by the two pronged attack of Hyder Hussein and Andrew Reed, and it was the latter who made the breakthough to dismiss both openers for low scores. The Star Studded batting line up for Kirkwood were keen to press home their power hitting one over for 20, but Jesse Smit came on to bowl spin and immediately made the breakthrough.
Danny Armstrong was back to his familiar long run and with the ball moving about was able to put the batting team on the back foot as they attempted to survive an aggressive spell.
It was not to be as Armstrong got two wickets with 2 balls and just missed out on the hat-trick. He picked up a further 3 wickets to take his haul to 5 for the match and with that he put to bed any chance of Kirkwood chasing down the total.
The tail of the batting line up hung around as Dumfries searched for the final wickets, which eventually came with 1 over remaining.
Croma Vigilant Dumfries Sunday XI remain unbeaten this season and host Carlisle this Sunday at Nunholm.
