The Dumfries Sunday XI constructed a victory in their first home match of the season, against Lanercost Colts, in a match sponsored by Ashleigh Building, to make it two wins out of two.
Dumfries chose to bat first at Nunholm and a hundred run second wicket partnership between James Little, the Ashleigh Player of the Match, and Mat Williams set up the innings up for some spectacular batting pyrotechics from their skipper later.
Williams was retired, mistakenly, first for 46, four runs short of his fifty amidst some communication failures. Little also retired but with reaching the threshold fifty and with both having hit pleasing early season batting form.
That brought skipper James Cox in to bat having hurried back from his duties away with the under-11s. He continued in a hurry and teed off to hit 44 in 22 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes and, if asked, a scoring rate of 200%. That meant the side rushed to a finishing total of 163 for 2 in a reduced 28 overs.
That late flurry changed the complexion of the run chase and the Dumfries bowlers also kept the scoring in check in the field and with wickets.
James Hobman opened the bowling with energy and was unlucky not to claim a wicket. Trevor Newport took the first wicket and Sean Thornely followed with the first of his two wickets. Number four Coombes kept the bowlers on their mettle in going on to score 43 not out whilst spinner Vaughn Staples found himself on a hat-trick.
Aiden Goodin and Sam Thornely kept pressing for wickets, and Sam claimed a bowled, and James Little got a run-out as the visitors finished on 112 for 7 for a fifty run victory for Dumfries.
