Dumfries Cricket Club faced a weekend interrupted with the weather intervening. Despite that two games were completed with Robert McBride producing a Croma Vigilant Player of the Match performance on Sunday.
On Sunday, Dumfries played Carlisle in the Eden Valley Sunday League. Dumfries posted a useful total of 175 for 9 off the 36 overs with skipper Matt Williams setting up a total with 51 retired and Robert McBride boosting that target including hitting a massive six to reach a rapid fifty, also retired. Gurupal Singh and James Hobman also contributed with scores in and around the twenties.
Clarkson of Carlisle dominated the early exchanges of the second innings by punching boundaries in an assured retiral fifty. The visitors kept up with the required run rate with a series of partnerships but wickets from Hobman, Singh, Hussain, and Muir stemmed their progress.
However an important well-run fourth wicket effort between young batters Ferguson and Smith set up a close finish at 143 for 3 with six overs left. Dumfries persisted by taking a further two wickets to press for a possible slip-up but Carlisle batted well to reach the winning target in the penultimate over.
Robert McBride was the Croma Vigilant Dumfries Player of the Match for setting a target of defend with his score of fifty, plus a good catch, and Mat Williams achieved a 'weekend' century with two successive not out fifties, both retired.
