Dumfries Under 15s 98 for 4 v Wigton Under 15s 83 for 5

On Monday 29th April Dumfries Under 15s travelled to Wigton for their first ever match in the Cumbria Junior League. They scored 98 for the loss of four wickets, Wigton reached 83 for five after 20 overs and Dumfries won by 15 runs.

Dumfries got off to an excellent start with James Little and Fergus Bainbridge scoring 30 retired and 28 respectively. James finding the boundary regularly with his customary pulls and cuts, Fergus proceeded more cautiously, allowing James to race to his retirement and then accelerated, his last scoring shot being a glorious six over midwicket. Wigton put their county bowlers on in the middle overs and the run rate fell, and so did some of our batters, but James Hobman, at 4, finished 13 not out after a sensible innings.

It looked like a good total but Wigton started confidently with skipper, Johnston, looking set for a big score. However a mix up, and a fine bit of sharp fielding from Lewis Fergusson saw him back in the pavilion, run out for 17. Our bowling started well with Sean Thornely and James Hobman bowling tight lines at pace but neither got wickets in their first spells. Blackburn looked dangerous and was pulling anything short for four. He retired on 30 but a good catch by Lewis again at fine leg off Katy Anderson, a caught and bowled for Sean and a clean bowled by a Vaughn Staples’ off-break dismissed the middle order for not very many. Some accurate bowling by the McBurnie brothers, Orla Montgomery and an over at the death by Max Corbett-Byers was enough to dampen any further momentum for Wigton and they finished 16 short of a win.
