Report: Fifteens win at Lanercost

Dumfries U15s 131 for 8 beat Lanercost 115 all out

Dumfries under-15s won their away league at Lanercost on Monday thanks to a batting recovery in their first innings to put themselves in second place in the league behind Carlisle having played one game fewer.

Dumfries batted first and found themselves in strife with opening bowler Wood hitting the stumps four times to have the visitors at 31 for 5 after a run-out added to their woes. However James Hobman and Aiden Goodin set about the recovery with a forty run partnership. James was caught and bowled for 19 but Vaughn Staples came in to continue the revival. Aiden was out for 21 but Matthew McBurnie provided 11 not out to help Vaughn add a crucial twenty run final partnership for a total of 131 for 8. Vaughn finished with 23 not out including a 6 deposited over square leg.

Dumfries started well in the Lanercost innings with James Hobman getting the first wicket caught by keeper Lewis Fergusson. The opening spin of Vaughn Staples also worked with a wicket bowled. James ended up with three wickets by dismissing numbers four and five as well to make it 30 for 4. However opener Liddle responded with 34 retired. Change bowlers Katy Anderson and Orla Montgomery worked their way through the middle order with one and two wickets respectively to make the home side 84 for 7. However Murray and Sharpe had other ideas as both then reached double figures. It required a good catch at deep square leg by Katy off the bowling of Aiden Goodin to break the partnership and a final wicket run-out finished the innings on 115 for a 16 run Dumfries win making those first innings ninth wicket runs vital for the victory.
