Dumfries U18s overcame St Michaels U18s on Tuesday by 3 runs in the first weekday match of the summer holidays.

Dumfries Under 18 v St Michael’s Under 18s

Dumfries won the toss and elected to bat on a lovely hot day at Nunholm. Adam Malik and James Little got off to the best of starts with the first two overs going for 18 runs.

Wide, being worth 2 runs, were to provide a major contribution for both teams (24 runs-worth off St Michael’s bowling and 42 off Dumfries).

Both batsmen retired after 30. Fergus Bainbridge arrived at the crease and started dealing in boundaries and got to 17 before being cruelly run out by his partner (a sharp bit of fielding at point by Mikey Turner and a direct hit with one stump to aim at).

Sean Thornely and Max Corbett-Byers continued to make runs before both fell to the senior bowlers, Sean bowled by Connor Lynch and Max caught behind off Ross Dalling. They added 17 and 14 respectively.

The Captain, Callum Reynolds-Lewis, arrived at the crease next and also retired on 33 after an aggressive knock with 6 boundaries. Only Mathew McBurnie, with 9, added much more to the total after that.

Dumfries finished on 183 for 4 after the 30 overs. A wicket each for Ross Dalling, Connor Lynch, Mikey Turner and a mention for young Kevin Rayn who bowled a good line and length at the death to collect the wicket of Luke McBurnie.

Hyder Hussain opened for Dumfries, and after two wides got a straight one through Ronan Wilson to take the first wicket. Connor Lynch arrived in belligerent mood and got his 32 with just 9 scoring shots. He was ably supported by Barnett who defended well until he was bowled by Sean Thornely.

The total was still looking very competitive at this stage at 51 for 2 off 10. Rory McLeod got a good one from Max and was bowled, this brought another senior to the crease, Ross Dalling, who kept the run rate going and retired at 30.

Callum McLaughlin was also bowled by Max for 4 and the keeper, Finlay Jack, took his place. After 22 overs the score was 144, St Michaels only needing 40 off the last 8. Niamh Muir replaced Ross and showed defiant defence to help Finlay get to 27 before he was bowled by Callum.
M Turner got 2 before hitting a catch to Sean off Callum’s bowling. His brother, Dan, arrived to make the finish very dramatic. Needing 11 off the last over he hit a 2, Callum then bowled 3 dots and a wide worth 2 which left Dan needing a 6 off the last ball for a tie. He hit it well but it only went for 4 and the match was won by Dumfries by 3 runs.

Dumfries U18s 183 for 4 (Callum Reynolds-Lewis 33 rtd, Adam Malik 31 rtd, James Little 30 rtd.)
St Michaels’ U18s 180 for 6 (Connor Lynch 32 rtd, Ross Dalling 30 rtd, Finlay Jack 27; Callum Reynolds -Lewis 2-17, Max Corbett Byers 2 for 22)
Dumfries Man of the match: Callum Reynolds-Lewis
