The local side finished short, with 136 for 4, of the West of Scotland target of 160 for 6 at Gatehouse.

It was a good run out for everybody on a day of sunny cricketing weather at Gatehouse.

The women from the club combined with Galloway Ladies to take on the newly formed West of Scotland women's side with players from West and Glasgow University.

Prior to the match commencing both sides held a minute's silence in memory of Scotland cricketer Con De Lange who tragically passed away this week at the age of just 38. If you can, please sponsor and support the Club's efforts on Saturday the 4th of May for Cricket Scotland's fundraising campaign for The Brain Tumour Charity. See here for details and in addition there is also a collection 'tin' at the bar.

The visitors batted first and lost an early wicket. However a 64 run second wicket partnership restored fortunes and good batting in the middle order took the final total up to 160 for 6 after their 30 overs. Nadia Tolliday was the top scorer with 47 and was followed by Nayma Shaikh with 33 in the later stages.

Jessica McCulloch took three wickets, including removing a middle stump. Rosy Ryan bowled tightly but with little reward as chances went down. Niamh Muir claimed two wickets in the field with two impressive run outs aided by keeper Sue Strachan, and catches were taken by Jess and Laura.

Niamh also starred with the bat as the top scorer with 41. That was after the locals had lost two early wickets. However an 81 run 3rd wicket partnership kept the side in contention but two key wickets fell to leave the score at 110 for 4 with ten overs to go with Rosy Ryan contributing 17.

The batting side was then not quite able to keep up that run rate against some tight bowling as the team side fell short as the overs ran out. Wickets for West were shared between Gardee, Tolliday, Trickett, and Mughis.

Jo and Sue also played their part from the Club with Jo bowling 2 overs for 12 and displaying her newly minted off drive as one of the batters.

And judging from the net practice on Friday, West of Scotland were a bit fortunate that Sue had to depart after keeping in the first innings but not getting to bat.

The first league game is on Sunday the 5th of May against Watsonians and is again at Gatehouse.

The Women's Section is open to all female players regardless of age, ability or experience.

So if anyone is interested in trying a new sport please contact the club or come along to the Womens and Girls practice on a Friday evening.
