Dumfries Cricket1 Sep 2023 - 06:30

Our final Saturday league games last weekend and a successful W&G Wee Bash on Sunday.

End of Evening Sessions
Next week sees the last of the weekday evening junior and senior official club sessions, to be followed by the Club Day on the following Sunday, the 10th. The coaches will take a break after volunteering since the start of the summer.

Arrangements are being made for junior sessions indoors. Dates are to be confirmed but are anticipated as being after the October school holidays.

Attendance has remained good at the Monday juniors and the Wednesday junions, with a recent increase for the latter.

Club Matches this Week
After the conclusion of the Saturday league fixtures last weekend, this Sunday sees our final league game in the Eden Valley Sunday League at Wetheral (Ed: Save the spiked shoes. This is now on an artificial wicket.)

Sunday - Dumfries U13s v Kirkby Stephen U13s AWAY 11am (League Cup Final)
Sunday - Sunday XI v Wetheral AWAY 1pm

And the final fixture for the U13s is a Cup Final (!) on Sunday morning at Kirkby Stephen (literally, at last).

Weekend Round-Up
Despite a solid opening 75 run partnership, and another fifty by Adam, the firsts lost after the final low total of 124 at Prestwick was readily chased. The 2s rued missing chances in the field to face a St Ninians total of 260 after Harith stuck to his task and took four wickets (Ed: which would have been five with a caught and bowled stretch). A nightmare start then was only recovered by the younger members in the side. In particular Cory, with the top score on his 2s debut, aided by a partnership with Harith got the side to three figures, 116.

After not managing to piece together enough wins this season these results mean that both 1s and 2s will be relegated to Western Premiership Two and Championship Two respectively next year.

It was more youngster endeavour on Sunday but with a win over Carlisle, to remain in second spot, after retiral fifities from Adam and Max, more runs from Cory and 3 wickets each for Billy and Harith (for 7 over the weekend).

See our summary .

The club had fourteen women and girls involved playing on Sunday and the previous Sunday soft ball pairs match, nine of whom had the opportunity to play for the first time. There are more Wee Bash tournaments scheduled indoors in October, November and December. Interested in trying soft ball cricket then email womenscricket@dumfriescricketclub.com .

Thanks Jordan
Jordan heads home this Sunday. A big thank you to him for 'mucking in' to help out the club with the ground and the juniors after arriving cold, part way through the season and in his first trip overseas. He has made a positive contribution to the club during his stay.

Scotland connection
(Ed: forgot about this) Good to see the Lindsay name featuring for Scotland U17s with a not out 76 against Ireland by Max Lindsay, the grandson and son of former Dumfries players Gordon and Jamie. And that was followed by a 50 the following day.

Cricket Committee Meeting
There is a close of season Committee Meeting on Wednesday the 6th Sep. Any queries to be raised can be emailed in advance to dumfriescricketclub@gmail.com. Also to be discussed will be the Cricket Scotland Public Consultation meeting the following week at DGOne. See below.

Cricket Scotland Public Consultation meeting - Dumfries, Sep 18
Monday, Sep 18th, 7pm at DG1 Leisure Complex, DG1 2HT

Cricket Scotland is organising “town hall” consultation meetings nationwide in the coming weeks for players, coaches, parents, volunteers, umpires, club officials or aspiring participants.

Register for the meeting in Dumfries at DGOne HERE to have your say. It would be good to have a healthy attendance to express views from this region about cricket in Scotland.

For reference, the results of the recent Cricket Scotland Survey can be found HERE.
